Day 46 of 100-day Creator Challenge

I started baking sourdough about twelve years ago. I got my starter from Neville who makes and sells his sourdough loaves in the local shops where he lives. He also oddly enough sells fruit trees.

When I got in touch with him about five years ago to get a grapefruit tree for a friend of mine he asked how my sourdough baking was going. I had to confess to him that I left my starter in Martin’s fridge when I left him a few years before that. Neville’s reply:

… that’s not so nice to hear leaving your starter! I’ll send you a new one.

And so I got a new starter. It still lives in my fridge and I still feed it regularly.

COVID lockdown of 2020 saw me baking a loaf everyday to drop off on rotation to my neighbours and friends. Before the lockdown was put in place, I bought a 25kg (55lbs) bag of bread flour to make sure I can continue baking bread. This lasted me five weeks. Just in time for the lockdown severity to lift.

My banneton proofing basket and pre-ferment for the next loaf in the background.

There have been times when I have abandoned the starter in the back of the fridge. It still faithfully recovered after some TLC of daily feeding.

I’ve shared the starter with multiple friends. One of them even named her starter. She said when she explained what a sourdough starter was to her friend who had no idea, the friend said “Oh so it’s like having a bread pet!” The way she said it sounded like she was saying Brad Pitt, and so that’s what my friend called her starter.
